Music Magazine Proposal.
Proposal.
The name of my magazine is Unplugged I will present this
masthead in a font that suits my house style and is a denotation of the name. The
Genre of my magazine is alternative rock and the sub-genre is acoustic rock, it
will combine the styles and artists that Kerrang and Acoustic magazine contain.
I want to showcase through my various main and secondary images the emotions the
genre and sub-genre portray. Acoustic/unplugged gigs that Rock and Alternative
artists do will be the main features in my magazine and I will ensure the house
style is well suited to its genre and sub-genre. My magazines target audience
is aimed at 14-20 year olds both male and female. My ideal reader mood board
further reflects the interests of my target audience such as; going to
festivals particularly Download fest and Leeds, wearing Dr Martens, vans and
converse and they would be typically known to have tattoo’s and piercings. My
target audience would also typically have an interest in books mainly fantasy
or gothic tales that complement the acoustic rock genre of my magazine and
their individuality and unique style will further reflect the unique unplugged
music. The majority of teenagers have a keen interest in social networking
sites so I will include a website link in my magazine so it can be accessed
online. I will further use social networking sites as an interaction for some
of my magazines competitions. I want to ensure that my magazine is as eye
catching as possible with a clear house style running through it, and a range
of secondary images on the cover that don’t leave the main cover image looking
too neutral. I hope it will be a visual representation of the type of people my
target audience are, by reflecting the type of gigs/festivals they would attend
and the type of style they have.
My magazines unique selling point will be various
competitions with prizes that are well suited to my target audience’s interests
and some of the artists/bands that will feature in the magazine. For example a
chance to win meet and greet tickets to one of the featured artists/bands gigs.
The cost of my magazine will be approximately £3 due to its big content and design.
There are various features I am considering using such as; a double page spread
on Ed Sheeran, festival news, the latest acoustic gigs and upcoming ones, band
photo shoots, new albums etc. I will distribute my magazine on print as well as
online on its own website and it will be advertised on the radio to promote
each new weekly issue. The publisher of Acoustic Magazine (which reflects the
genre/sub-genre of my magazine) is ‘Blaze publishing’ therefore either they or
the publisher of Kerrang ‘Bauer Media Group’ will publish my magazine; i will
make this decision whilst I’m in the process of constructing my magazine.

Masthead Fonts.
I came to the decision of using this font for the mast head of my music magazines cover as it compliments the house style of my magazine and it also compares to the font the 'fender' logo has therefore this reflects the idea of an 'unplugged' guitar. I think this font stands out but is still elegant and unique.

Aquinas Magazine Front Cover & Evaluation.
For my preliminary task i was asked to produce a front cover and contents page for a new college magazine. On my magazines front cover i think i was successful for the following reasons; I positioned all of the secondary images on and around the main cover image in an effective way by ensuring they compliment the magazines house style and make the neutral background look more eye catching. I carefully selected a font for the covers masthead that i think looks professional for a college magazine and it is also similar to the font of the original Aquinas logo. I made sure i added each and every detail to my magazines cover such as its issue number, price and bar code to make it look as professional as possible. Not to mention i reflected the information i had gathered from my questionnaire research on my cover for example with the promotion/advertisement and the Top shop competition. I further used a pull quote from one of the magazines articles to gain my target audiences interest. However when creating the front cover for my music magazine i will take into consideration that it will look more effective if i take more time when editing my main cover image on Photoshop as the main cover image on my Aquinas magazine has rough edges in some areas. I will also ensure next time that using my audience research for ideas i will use more secondary images on my music magazines front cover so that the main cover image doesn't look too neutral and i will further consider capturing less background in my main cover image or using a interesting background instead if necessary.

Photo's for Music Magazine with explanations.
This photo will be appropriate for my magazine as it can be used a secondary image for my double page spread on Ed Sheeran. It also helps to advertise gigs/concerts which could then be discussed in the article.
Ed sheeran is going to be the featured artist on my double page spread as his music fits into the acoustic sub genre of my magazine. Therefore this image will be effective as a secondary image for the article showing Ed Sheeran in concert. The lighting in this photo helps to capture the artist and focuses on the vocal point of the image.
I may use this image for the double page spread in my magazine as i think it could potentially work effectively as a secondary image as it shows the artist preforming which would be appropriate for the article. However the shot isn't a close up so it may not appear as clear as some of my other images of Ed Sheeran, although the artist name on the set background looks good.
This image of Ed Sheeran could also be used as a secondary image on my double page spread of the artist as it captures the artist in concert and engaging the crowd with his actions, which could interest my target audience as they may want to see him live.
This signed album of Ed sheeran could be used either on my magazines front cover as a promotion or in my double page spread article on Ed Sheeran telling the reader about signings the artist is currently doing in various locations.
I may use this this image somewhere in my music magazine, perhaps on the front cover or contents page to show the band Mayday Parade and write an advertisement on meet and greet tickets that the band are currently selling. This advertisement could be positioned along side the image and further promote the bands new album 'monsters in the closet.'
I may consider using this image on the front cover of my magazine or on the contents page as a secondary image once it has been cropped. This image is effective as it supports the genre and sub genre of my magazine 'Acoustic/Unplugged Rock.' Not to mention the lighting in the photo looks proffessional and captures the band well whilst they're preforming an acoustic set at the Royal Nothern College Of Music in Manchester.
I think this image may feature somewhere in my magazine as a secondary image as it compliments the music genre of my magazine and is an example of a traditional acoustic instrument.
I am going to consider using this image of Ed Sheeran either on my front cover or contents page as a secondary image to advertise the double page spread on the artist inside the magazine, or as one of the main images on my double page spread. However using this image as the main image on my article will depend on whether the quality of it is good enough once resizes and/or edited.
I may use this image of Danny the lead singer of the band the script on my contents page or front cover as a secondary image. The image supports the 'Acoustic' sub genre of my magazine with the artist playing an acoustic slowed down version of a song in the image.
As an alternative i may feature this image somewhere in my magazine instead of the one above depending on which i think he lighting is the most effective in, as i want the image to be of a high quality and capture the mood of my magazine's genre.
I may use this image as a secondary image on either my magazines front cover or contents page to advertise one of the bands that will feature in my magazine. I could also use this image to promote their new tour as this image is from their previous tour with their second album.

Aquinas Contents Page and Evaluation.
For my preliminary task i was asked to produce a front cover and contents page for a new college magazine. On my contents page I believe i was successful for the following reasons; I kept a consistent house style with both my front cover and my contents page (black, white & red) which suit the college genre of my magazine and link to the Aquinas Logo, i used appropriate images to reflect what the articles within the magazine will feature and i further chose fonts that compliment each other and clearly suit my magazines house style. To give the reader an insight into what each article is about i put a caption below each article's heading and placing page numbers on the images on my contents page makes it clear to my target audience what they're reading, avoiding confusion and further entices them to the article. However there are some minor errors with my contents page which i will avoid doing in my Music magazine for example; the positioning of the different writing isn't consistently in line with each other and the font size of the numbering also isn't consistent, so to ensure it my future contents page looks professional i will take more time to arrange the writing on the page and size it correctly. From researching different magazines i have now realised that the numbering on magazines contents pages aren't usually in chronological order and instead are often numbered randomly or in ascending even numbers. Not to mention next time i will make sure the images used blend in with the writing on my contents page to ensure it looks original.

Aquinas Magazine Reasearch 3
Topshop and Topman are clearly top in popularity of high street shops so to link to one of my other research results an artile in my magazine will give college students the chance to take part in an instagram topshop challenge. The challange involves you taking pictures in topshop or topman clothing and uploading these photos onto instgram with a hashtag of '#topshop' or '#topman' for a chance to win a modelling job and have your picture put onto topshop/topmans website. My research has shown me that alot of students watch soaps therefore an article in my Aquinas Magazine will be based on favourite soap actors and actresses and a 'hot or not' rating. As relaxing is important to many people when they aren't at college at the back of my magazine there will be 50% off vouchers for the body shops spar products range.
Aquinas Magazine Research 2
The Rule Of Thirds
The rule of thirds is where you divide a photo into thirds with two imaginary lines vertically and two lines horizontally making three columns, three rows and nine sections in the images. The rule of thirds breaks down an image into four important parts so the points of interest within the photo should be placed within those four sections.
Music Magazine Cover Analysis
The choice of colours used for the magazines front cover fits
in with its house style which is black, white, red and yellow. The colour red
and how it is splatted over the cover is a connotation of blood and death which
intentionally links to the music genre ‘death to pop punk’ as it symbolises the
heavy music that part of the magazine contains. Not to mention the brand
identity of the magazine particularly the mast head compliments Kerrang’s house
style as well as its bold typography. The promo in the top left hand corner is
positioned within the header of the cover gives the reader an insight into what
artists some of the articles feature and the promo is a persuasive technique to
get them to purchase the magazine; the header further ties together with the
pug in order to advertise the promo further. The second promo on the cover is
advertised to suit the magazines target audience as these particular festivals
are in the same category of music genres as Kerrang. The main cover image is a mid/social shot on
an eye level angle to emphasise the passion the band put into their music and to
directly grab the target audience e.g. you me at six and pop-rock fans. The
order of the band members in the main cover image positions the lead singer at
the front with a closer angled shot on him to underline his importance in the
band and to further gain the fans interest. The gaze of this image is also on
eye level for the same reasons as the eye level angle shot. The devil horns
that the lead singer of you me at six is wearing in the cover image is a
connotation of the band’s music genre and what they may portray through some of
their lyrics, not to mention this intentionally links to the play on words of
the colloquial language positioned over the image ‘come on over to the dark
side’. The anchorage ‘You Me At Six’ is just below the image to make it clear
as to who the band are for those who aren’t aware. The secondary images on the
cover also reflect what bands and artists feature inside this particular
magazine and the size of the images highlight the size of the article compared
to the main cover image one. A Pull quote is used in the bottom left hand
corner of the cover ‘we know a lot about Jean-Claude Van Damme’, to give the
target audience an insight into the article inside. To fit in with the magazine
layout the barcode is placed in the bottom right hand corner and on it, it
presents the issue No. of the magazine, the price and the date which keeps the
cover tidy and layered but still provides the reader with the information they
need.

Aquinas Magazine Research 1
My research results show me that the majority of college students have a keen interest in Media therefore I'm going to put a promo on my magazine cover about the chance to win a free ipad. I will also feature an article in the magazine about a christmas photography course. Food clearly plays a big part in teenagers life and can help to keep them going throughout a college day so one of my articles will feature a Subway Vs Mcdonalds debate.
